It’s been about a month since I started working out again (remember I had surgery in September, which meant I couldn’t do anything – literally – for about eight weeks).
I got back on the exercise horse on Nov. 1. And since I promised to keep you up to date on how things are going on that front, here’s your next monthly update.
Let’s get to the numbers first, because I know you like those (!):
As of this week’s weigh-in and measurements (every Monday) and two months in, I have:
- Dropped a total of 11 lbs
- Dropped a total of 9”³
- Seen my BMI go from 25.2 (officially overweight) to 23.
If you look at my numbers after month 1, you’ll notice that they’re not that different. I am not worried about that, because a) I didn’t work out for two months and when I started up again, had to do so gradually and b) as was inevitable, I slid off the healthy eating bandwagon a bit.
So I’m actually pleased I’ve dropped the weight/inches I’d put on while I was “off.” And down a little bit from month 1 as well.
And you can see how happy I am with where I am right now in that photo up there, when I pulled out – and fit into – a little black dress I hadn’t worn since New Year’s Eve 2009, this past Sunday (we were headed to a fancy event).
There are still things I can’t do, like run (which is ok since I don’t like to) and jump, because of lingering sensitivity from my surgery, but I’ll probably be able to start doing those in a month or two.
But I am back to being able to plank (even one-handed!), crunch, go deeper on the TRX, slam that firehose and squat like you wouldn’t believe it.
Do I like how I look? Damn right I do. But more importantly, I like how I feel. I feel stronger, I feel more focused, which helps me with my work, and I feel more in charge of my health and my life.
I’m becoming more adventurous, too; I bought a pair of Vibram minimalist shoes (they’re great!) and earlier this week, did my first workout in the rain. Believe me, I have never been the kind of person to do that, or to wear shoes that look like they’d be more at home atop a coral reef.
And I’m touched
I’m touched by the many notes of support people share with me, particularly in the Bootcamp Buddies group I started on Facebook (if you’re on a similar journey to wellness and would like to join, just let me know, it’s a wonderful support group).
I’m touched by how all of you spur me on, and how encouraging you’ve been through this entire process.
I’m touched by how patient my trainer, Grant Hill of MyBootcamp, has been. He never poo-poohs any discomfort I felt and is mindful of what my body still can’t do, yet pushes me a little more with every session.
And I’m particularly touched that my husband, who came down to watch a training session with Grant last week, told me I was pulling “Rocky-like moves,” and is joining me on this adventure. We start our first partner session today!
So thank you, and when you read my next update in about a month, hopefully I will have lost, and gained, more. In all the right ways.
[…] this point – midway through February, and picking up from my last update – here’s where the numbers stand. So far, […]
Just getting in here, I just had to add my “Yes!!!” Keep it going, girl! ;)
@ShakirahDawud Thank you!
NICE! So happy to hear how well this is going for you. I admire your commitment and, as my mom used to say, stick-to-itness.
@mdbarber Thank you! Being a measurement nerd, I’ve set up a tracking spreadsheet in Excel. So now Monday is my favorite day of the week, because that’s when I track my “weights and measures” on a weekly basis. When I do well, I get really pumped. When I don’t, I get really irritated and psyched to do more!
You GO @shonali ! Congratulations!
@JGarant Thanks, Jamie!
I dunno, I might be leery of any training program that put me in the hospital; but if you come out looking like you did in your pic above maybe I should think about it, huh? That dress might not look the same on me though………just sayin’……….
Out of all the ‘habits’ I have, good and bad, being ‘active’ is definitely a good one for me. I think it’s great you are pro-actively doing something to keep looking incredibly awesome like you do. Certainly the benefits are making you feel better and keeping you mobile longer in life.
Best of luck to you and it appears Mr Hill has you on a ‘sustainable’ pace; something I alluded to in my post about how social can be like a gym membership. That’s the key, keep it fun and sustainable.
@bdorman264 I literally LOL’d when I read your comment, Bill. I will have to tell granthillfit that one! But you’re absolutely right; the sustainability is key. I’ve jumped on and off so many fitness/wellness programs (don’t even ask me to think of how much money I’ve wasted on gym memberships, etc.). So far, at least – don’t they say “never say never”? – this one is working.
You are an inspiration, Shonali, in all you do: your workout regime, your founding of Bootcamp Buddies, your work with Blue Key, your awesome posts…Keep gaining, my friend:) Cheers! Kaarina
@KDillabough Thank you, and for all the support – you keep me going too, with all your 5ks, etc. Now, the day I can do one of those I will REALLY be proud of myself…
Grats Shonali! You looked great when I met you. Now you are full on glamour diva.
I myself have been a workout fiend the last few months and now fit into jeans 10 years old! If I could give up booze I would be a stick. But helps having a 23 year old girlfriend as my incentive to be in almost the best shape of my life now at….uhm…my advanced age LOL
@HowieSPM I didn’t think aliens advanced in age Howie;)
@KDillabough@HowieSPM Trudat!
@HowieSPM You looked great when I saw YOU! I think we need to catch up again IRL in a few months, eh? Thanks, Howie!
Awesome! Thanks for sharing!
@kmueller62 Thanks!
@rachaelseda Aw, thank you!
Awww I am oh so very proud of you Shonali. AND I am oh so jealous of your new shoes!! I have been wanting a pair for about a 1 1/2 years since I read “Born to Run” but I have yet to break down and buy a pair!
Thank you for this update. I know even for me personally it’s inspiring to see and makes me want to go to the gym when I don’t feel like it. I think it’s very important to support the people you care about on these types of journeys and I am honored to support you in yours!
I am beyond excited that John will be joining you! How fun! I have tried to get Nate to come running with me (I did so successfully once) but he feels the same way you do about running but his statement is “unless there’s a ball I don’t understand what is fun about just running” haha. But I do enjoying going to the gym with him and find it to be a good activity as a couple to be active so I am happy John will be joining you and know that his participation will continue to help you succeed even more!
Congrats girl you look amazing but what’s more important is that you feel amazing inside, and that radiates from within you and inspires others!
@rachaelseda Thank you! I’m really excited about our session today as well. Who knows, maybe John will out-bootcamp me… I’m certainly rooting for him to do so. Maybe the next step is for you and Nate to join us?
@Shonali Haha maybe!
