It’s been a few months since I gave you an update on how I’m doing when it comes to my wellness goals. And I know you’re just dying to hear…!
But first, a little story…
“You are a very strong woman”
A couple of months ago, I went to CVS to pick up a box (30 lbs) of firelogs. I carried it to the counter, and the cashier was aghast that I didn’t use a cart.
“Let me help you out with that,” he offered. I smiled and declined, because it wasn’t a far walk to my car at all, and I told him that.
He was horrified. “At least let me get you a cart!” I declined again.
And then he looked at me and said, “You are a very strong woman.”
I can’t tell you what a rush that gave me. A few months ago, I would probably have laughed and brushed it off, because sometimes I’m uncomfortable receiving compliments.
This time, though, I smiled and said, “Yes, I am.”
And I walked out of the store on the biggest high.
The numbers
At this point – midway through February, and picking up from my last update – here’s where the numbers stand. So far, I’ve:
- Dropped a total of 18.2 lbs
- Dropped a total of 15.5 inches
- Brought my BMI down from 25.3 to 22.4
- Brought my body fat percentage, which started out at 31.6%, down to 24.3%
Yea, baby!
What’s really changing
The most interesting thing about this whole process is how I feel inside. Yes, I’m happier with the way I look, and how my clothes fit (I’ve graduated to a lower dress size).
But I’m really happier about getting stronger, having more energy, and feeling more confident. I don’t think I’d have had the guts to do the Valentine’s Day video this time last year… in fact, I know I wouldn’t have. And working out in the rain, or snow? Ha!
I’m also learning to be more accepting of my limitations.
A few days ago, I was really taken with the idea of participating in the Royal Burpee Challenge. If you’ve ever done a burpee, you know how absolutely KILLER they are.
But I realized pretty quickly that the thought of building up to 115 of them was stressing me out. I’m only just starting to do pushups properly! And the one thing I don’t want to get is stressed over my workouts, because I’ve really started enjoying them. So I decided not to do it.
I’d rather continue to build my strength. And along the way, I want to lose the fat and get “ripped” (because Grant believes I can be, so of course, now I have to get there)… and then maybe another time I’ll participate in a challenge like that.
I want to do what I’m doing well. And if that means not doing something else, that’s fine.
Motivating women
My friend Liz Scherer has been writing a three-piece series on “motivating women” (to change their lifestyles particularly as it pertains to health and wellness) and I’m absolutely honored that she chose me to be one the three “motivating women” she features. The other two absolutely terrific women who are part of it are Kami Watson Huyse and Julie Pippert.
Even though Kami and Julie are part of the Bootcamp Buddies group I’d set up on Facebook, where we talk frequently about what we’re going through, it’s been just fascinating to read about their journeys and philosophies in greater depth. You can too: here’s Part 1, Part 2, and Part 3, which just published today.
I draw motivation from them and so many others. And if I can motivate someone else – even one person – to change their lifestyle, to get healthier, to live a better life … what greater gift is there than that?
If you’re looking for some motivation, check out this video that Grant Hill (my trainer) recently filmed, that shows you what his workout is like. I’m nowhere near the advanced level, but I will get there.
And thank you, all of you, for the way you cheer me on. That is huge motivation for me, and I am so grateful to have such a terrific community.
Bootcamp or no bootcamp, you have made my life immensely richer, and for that I can’t thank you enough.

You just made me smile – congrats! I’m part of a bootcamp for mamas and I got such a rush a few weeks ago when one of the girls called me GI Jane because of my toe push-ups. Very inspiring post!
@StephF You GO, GI Jane! I love that. You’re definitely ahead of me, because I can’t go very deep if I do toe push-ups (I can on the knees, though). Thank you, Steph!
@shonali Here’s to from the couch to 5K: bravo to you!
@kdillabough Thank you, my friend!
@shonali You’re welcome:) & U might enjoy my monthly column here. Today’s post is on Choice. http://t.co/i3xYwBQ4
@kdillabough I will read it tonight/tomorrow, I promise. I’m wiped right now. :(
I really want to try the ropes workout. I hear great things about it. Keep up the great work, so awesome that you have come so far.
@TheJackB I did ropes when I was in drama school. Can you say OMG? Not saying I wouldn’t do it again, but that is quite the workout! And thank you, Jack!
@adamtoporek Thank you, Adam!
@shonali My pleasure!
Congrats Shonali! Love the workout stuff you’re doing — I incorporate some of that stuff into my routine.
I do Burpees sometimes and 115 is simply brutal. One thing about the Burpees is you can only push yourself so far (at least if you’re north of your early Twenties) because it’s really easy to injure yourself once fatigue sets in and your form disappears. Saw an MMA fighter online train burpees with a medicine ball, so he was dropping down, catching himself, and sprawling with his hands on the ball instead of on the floor!!! Crazy core strength.
Keep up the great work!
@adamtoporek Wow. I can totally see how you could injure yourself doing burpees. I’m impressed that you do them at all!
Thanks so much for the encouragement, Adam. Btw, I’ll be in Orlando next month. Possible to meet up? @bdorman264 …?
@Shonali @bdorman264 Orlando – Part Deux! Excellent. Email me (us) details and let’s make it happen. :)
Woohooo! Love this progress reort Shonali. I am hovering around my best shape ever at 44. I need to get a mountain bike to go over the top especially once I am fully in Vermont. Pushing your limits actually helps improve mental strength because you can then feel you can achieve or endure anything.
@HowieSPM Thanks! And I LOVE that you are in the best shape of your life at an age when a lot of people would be wondering if there’s anything left. You and I know – and can show them – that there is!
You’re so right about pushing the limits. Like today, Grant made me do pushups alternating with zero-weight shoulder presses (much tougher than they sound), starting with 10 each, then 9 each, etc., all the way down to 1, and then another 10 shoulder presses for good measure. Aaargh! But I did it.
Tomorrow I start the Couch-to-5K program. Hey, why not, right kdillabough ?
@Shonali @HowieSPM Absolutely!
‘Yes I am’ as I flexed my guns and picked up the wood and ran all the way home…………and then back to get my car…………..:)
Congratulations; it is a good feeling indeed and I’m so happy for you. It’s also good to maintain a sustainable pace and you will do fine.
Keep up the good work.
@bdorman264 Hahahahha! You’re funny. :)
Thank you, Bill!
I just joined a proper gym for getting back into shape and for increasing stamina and I am no way near to what you do! I am so inspired that I am running an extra mile on the treadmill tomorrow!
I think my eyes have been opened two inches high by just looking at that video!
@Hajra Way to go! Did I tell you about our secret Bootcamp Buddies group on Facebook? It’s basically a support group, but low pressure. If you’d like to join, just let me know!
And re: the video… I KNOW! Crazy, huh?
@Shonali Support group as in tips on working out and just keeping me going to gym everyday? I would love to join it! I just am hopeless at keeping in good shape! :(
@Hajra Consider it done. And yes, support group as in keeping you going (hopefully) and we definitely share tips, experiences, good/bad moments, etc., knowing that none of us is an expert. I think you’ll find it fun… so looking forward to seeing you there!
@Shonali Thanks so much :) I am so excited now… I will run an extra mile… ;)
@shonali @lizscherer @kamichat @jpippert you are indeed a strong woman and such an inspiration! So proud of you!! #MyBootcamp
Aww I’m smiling ear to ear. I love hearing your updates and being able to root you on. Your determination is definitely inspiring. I think for me a big thing is to not stress myself out about working out. I go through phases where I love running outside and could go for miles and other times I’m dragging my feet. So I tell myself, “Just go walk on the treadmill and watch TV, as long as your moving that’s what matters.” And guess what? Once I get myself downstairs on the treadmill and get into a show (this is just about the only time I watch TV) before I realize it I’m not only walking, I’m now running and the time flies by. If I had told myself “you have to run outside for 6 miles” even when I didn’t want to at all, I may have just quit and said I’m not doing anything. When I go through phases of what I’d rather do to exercise I just tell myself “as long as your doing something and exercising it doesn’t matter” and once I take the burden away I end up doing more then I set out to do and I’m never disappointed.
I do really want to try boot camp though…especially ever touching those rock hard arms of yours ;)
@rachaelseda Just wait until you see me on Monday.
Thank you for all the encouragement, my dear – it means a lot!
You go girl! Yes….I went there. Congrats, Shonali! You look great.
@KenMueller Hahah! Thank you, Ken!
