[Ed: I’m on vacation. Here’s the fourth of a week’s worth of guest posts.]
There was an auto-DM waiting for me this morning. The hairs on the back of my neck stood up, and I felt my #HowlerMonkeyAngst boiling to the surface.
It is from the seed of angst that most of my guest blog posts are born. The wheels were turning and my mind started flying off in dozens of different directions.
I considered all sorts of examples that could illustrate why this DM was worse than a marketing plan based upon offending 80% of the population, just so the remaining 20% would feel special.
My seething rage continued to boil, until I was calmed by the soothing afterglow of a bacon-egg-and-cheese sandwich on an English muffin.
I asked myself, “Was this person trying to make me so angry I wanted to abduct her and confine her to a room with The Girl From Ipanema playing over and over again?”
No, of course not. She was probably new to Twitter and didn’t know that sending automated DM’s was worse than asking a NOT pregnant woman when she is due. I went to her Twitter page, sure I would find she had 22 followers and was following 37 people. I expected to see something in her bio about cats and maybe snark.
WTF?
She had 1,500 followers and was following 2,000.
Here’s the problem.
The reason she sent me the auto-DM was because I followed her last night after tweeting with her during a #hashtagchat. She had RT’d several of my snarky tweets. I appreciated it, she seemed nice in the chat, so I followed her. That is how it works, right?
Her auto DM was: Thanks – honored to be in communication with you! http://(Herwebsite) To validate click here: http://truetwit.com/777WTF777
I understand the theory of TrueTwit, as spammers are a real problem. I am forced to block 20 – 30 followers, every single day, so I definitely get it.
But this is the deal; it only takes me two minutes. Click, check their page, it is usually obvious who needs to be blocked, by the Listed:Follower ratio. Under 5%, almost always gets blocked; under 1%, usually get reported for spam. Also the super hot women in the avatar or the eggheads are a dead giveaway.
I am willing to spend two minutes a day to avoid using DM’s with TrueTwit in them, so as not to appear like a noob who doesn’t realize that AUTO DMs SUCK and that TrueTwit is annoying and pisses people off.
So after careful analysis, considering that the woman was NOT a noob, and that, in her bio, she purports to be knowledgeable about marketing, I can only assume that she is simply… Stupid. Really Freaking Stupid. I assume she didn’t get very good grades in high school. It is obvious that her art teacher thought she her work was profoundly awful.
I assume she wasn’t good in gym class, and that her parents were terrible people, who were possibly in prison or public office.
I will not respond to her DM. I will not click on the link to verify that I am real, since she was having a freakin’ conversation with me last night. I will not eat green eggs and ham; I will not eat them… [sorry, she has pushed me over the edge, and I have begun to speak in Seuss.]

@nittyGriddyBlog Thanks for RTing my blog over at Shonali’s place. :-)
@bdorman264 The house is surprisingly clean. You and @HowieSPM did a good job… as did @Narciso17 , jgarant and @3HatsComm . You are all so great, really. Thank you.
@NancyD68 The pointy-haired bosses – I’m ROFLing here!!
@3HatsComm That was one of the best comments EVER. @HowieSPM
@bdorman264 @NancyD68 @Sean McGinnis I am sure that will start showing up in top 100 ways to get followers lists soon.
@bdorman264 @HowieSPM Thanks Bill, it was my favorite line in the rant too.
@HowieSPM Did you get mine? It said, thanks for the follow; send me $10. I was wondering, because I haven’t seen the money.
@ExtremelyAvg @NancyD68 @Sean McGinnis I jokingly replied in someone’s post to send all the hot chick porno spams over to me and guess what; it triggered something because I must have gotten 50 of them right after I posted it.
I assume she wasn’t good in gym class, and that her parents were terrible people, who were possibly in prison or public office…………..I love this Brian………….
I manually check them out and go back to their sites and see what they are all about, but I’m not big on receiving auto DM’s. There have been several posts on how much automation to use, but certainly be smart and remember you are still dealing w/ real people.
Good to see you house sitting and walking Shonali’s dog while she was away. Hopefully the house was presentable after @HowieSPM and I cleaned it up earlier in the week.
@NancyD68 @Sean McGinnis I have a guess about the reason. I am of the opinion that when one gets a clump, it is from a single individual. I once had 12 or so new spammy people following me, two of them had the same super hot avatar, but were from different states.
@3HatsComm @NancyD68 It is true, I have been known to add the #bacon hash tag or use it in a blog title, when in fact, bacon wasn’t mentioned at all. I believe one day, the use of bacon, in a tweet, will be the most powerful weapon in our social media arsenal. Ssshhh…don’t tell.
@NancyD68 I think you’ll see that come and go…. I experienced the exact same thing…. I’ve been in a really good stretch lately… {knock wood}
@HowieSPM Will you LinkedIn with me?
@NancyD68 Just watch out for @ExtremelyAvg he promises bacon and it’s all LIES.
@ExtremelyAvg YW :)
@Sean McGinnis They also come in clumps. Rare I get only one random spammer. I get a whole bunch at one time. Usually at least 10. I think also that now I am getting close to 500 followers, I am attracting the attention of the spammers more too. Just a thought.
@NancyD68 Know what’s really interesting? The number and ratio of twitter spam accounts seems to really ebb and flow. My hypothesis is that it depends on the number of follower one has on one’s account (but I could be completely wrong)!
I have been seeing FAR fewer now with 6,000+ followers than I did with 1500 or so. Very strange.
I woke up this morning to 15 new followers.They were all spam. All of them. I did one big giant flushing. Sometimes if i wake up and am in a happy mood, I may play a bit of soccer with them, kick them around Twitter first before flushing them.
Why must we still deal with this issue? Why can’t we have bacon instead of spam? I even had a spammer on my blog. I feel very special now. Not really.
I got an auto-DM this morning for the corporate account I handle. That really annoyed me. I wanted to unfollow right away, but the pointy-haired bosses want followers. “Please like us on Facebook” is not engaging with your audience.
Sending bacon however, is VERY engaging indeed. :)
@3HatsComm Thanks for the RT and comments on my guest blog post over at WUL. You are awesome!
@Narciso17 Thanks for the RT on my guest blog post at WUL today, and the great comment.
you sure it was the DM and not lack of coffee?
the ones i hate more:
thanks for the follow. please like my page on facebook
thanks for the follow. insert business pitch
but yes i agree take freaking two mins. especially when you were probably their first new follower since may
Amen, none of us have time to waste, we barely have enough time for ourselves!

@3HatsComm @jennimacdonald seanmcginnis I’d do it again too! ;) Forgive the formatting issues – just changed themes on my personal blog and working out the kinks – but I started my blog by screaming about autho DMs:
http://312digital.com/2010/11/10/things-that-make-the-internet-cry-1-the-twitter-auto-dm/
Think @jennimacdonald nailed it: the idea is to waste YOUR time rather than THEIRS. Who wants to have to work to clear their follows and followings? Dude, clicking that ‘block and report’ spam takes like 5 whole seconds, maybe 10 if you didn’t get good grades in high school. Want to say it was seanmcginnis who called the tweet validation folks “pious dipshits.” I tend to agree, FWIW.
Brian I HATE having to validate my follow. If I’m following you it’s for a reason, I don’t follow everyone who follows me. I will only follow you if you can add substantial knowledge to help me with my career or lifestyle. For example social media, the outdoor industry, Seattle, Maine, wine, design or art.
Not to be arrogant but if you made the cut, you are special. Please do not ask me to validate my click. I’m managing 5 Twitter accounts so I really don’t want to waste my time validating my follow, especially if you don’t have 1,000s of followers. To address auto DMs, I get so many that I don’t even read them if the first 4 words are: Thanks for the Follow…
SIGH…You’d Think That This Kind of Thing Would Have Gone By the Wayside By Now…But Alas, As More People Begin to See the Need to Flock to Twitter, The More They See It As a ‘Need’ As Opposed to Seeing It As Having ‘Value.’
Let This Serve As a Lesson to Novices and Dummies That This Kind of Behavior Will *Not*
* Earn you Any Leads
* Drive More Traffic to Your Site
* Raise Your Credibility (In Fact, It Will Tarnish It)
Just Try Taking The Little Bit of Extra Time to Have Some Kind of Dialogue. It Certainly Can’t Take Up That Much Time…After All We’re Limited to 140 Character or Less, Right?
